Right before we all meet at the DIS and DIS40 Autumn Conference 2023 in Berlin, we would like to invite you to an Interactive Brunch Workshop in Hamburg on a topic that is close to our hearts: the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations. In order to gain a better understanding of what the Campaign is about, we want to dive together into the meaning of the Green Pledge plus its Protocols and discuss with you what we as arbitration practitioners can do in our everyday business to induce a sustainable change in arbitration and thereby reduce our carbon footprint. Because we truly believe that some changes may seem to only have small effects, but in sum, can make a huge difference. We are convinced that we are far beyond the point in time when contemplating the “whether” of reducing carbon emissions is the right question to be asked. Rather, the question shall be “what” specifically can be done to adopt more sustainable environmental behaviours without compromising the quality of our client services. In our Interactive Brunch Workshop we would like to hear your perspective and discuss with you – as a whole group and in small break-out units – specific measures different actors of the arbitration community (such as arbitrators, arbitral institutions, law firms, hearing venues and other legal service providers) can adopt to help fight the climate crisis. We are very pleased that Laura Halonen (Wagner Arbitration) has agreed to join as presenter and impulse generator for our Interactive Brunch Workshop. Laura is an English solicitor of Finnish origin. She has practised investment and commercial arbitration for 20 years in England, France and Switzerland and is now located in Berlin since 2019. Laura represents Germany on the Europe sub-committee of the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations. She believes that we cannot and should not aim to separate our “business” from the “personal” when it comes to our core beliefs and principles, which is why she is incorporating her green lifestyle also into her working life to the extent that she can.
